Spyware and Malware Down Significantly

Companies in Great Britain (UK) now see about a 60% reduction in Malware and Spyware Infections over 2 years ago. This Spyware reduction data is a result of a survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The Business related Malware-Spyware survey was at the behest of the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform posted in a press release by the Infosecurity conference this week in London. Further details of the report will be released next week.

But this is not to say it’s time to relax. In the press release Chris Potter says, “…virus protection. Only a tiny minority of companies don’t take this area seriously. The message from this survey is clear – if you haven’t got anti-virus and anti-spyware software, you’re way outside the benchmark.”

The report states that only 14% of UK companies reported a malware infection last year, down from 35% two years ago when the last ISBS survey was carried out. Even among very large businesses, less than half had an infection last year. This is good news.

However, two-thirds of the companies that were infected by malware saw that as their worst information security breach of the year. Spyware is now accounting for one in six of the worst infections. This could suggest that attacks are becoming less frequent and more sophisticated or that the anti-spyware products have reached a threshold of performance capability. The reality is that security fixes are typically a reactive process.

The press release goes on to discuss that organized crime is still diligent in developing stealth malware to gain private and confidential information, plus hacking that opens security holes and exploits weaknesses for financial gain.

A continuous spyware and malware threat still exists for businesses on the Internet from these criminals. Less secure home users and small to medium size businesses may be snagged into botnets that can run continuous and relentless security breach attempts.
